The next time you waltz through the hardware store grabbing things for the garden - head inside and grab yourself some longer screws for all the doors in your house. Why you ask?
Most contractors install the plates with the supplied screws which are only a half inch long and come out with one kick by potential intruder.
Install 4 inch screws in their place that go through the door frame and into the framing of the house.
You can see in the picture below that the small screw is the screw supplied with the door hardware.
Forcing an intruder to work harder, make a bunch of noise and be foiled in their initial plan can not only give you time to arm yourself, but they will most likely move on to an easier target.
You're welcome. Stay tuned for more cheap and easy safety ideas for yourself and your home.
